Washington DC [US], February 23: Kerry Washington’s Netflix war drama The Six Triple Eight clinched the 'Outstanding Motion Picture' award at the 56th NAACP Image Awards, reported Variety. Written and directed by Tyler Perry, the film, based on the true story of an all-Black, all-female WWII battalion, secured five awards in total, including Best Actress for Washington, Ensemble, Breakthrough Performance, and Supporting Actress for Ebony Obsidian.

“At a time when our history is under attack, to tell a film about the brilliance of Black women and have it resonate globally is an incredible honor,” Washington told Variety on the red carpet.

The ceremony, hosted by comedian Deon Cole at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, also honored Keke Palmer as Entertainer of the Year. “No one has uplifted me more than the people in this room,” Palmer said during her acceptance speech.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the prestigious Chairman’s Award, delivering a stirring speech on resilience and democracy. Other honorees included Dave Chappelle (President’s Award), The Wayans Family (NAACP Hall of Fame), and BET Media Group (Founders Award).

The event also spotlighted communities affected by recent wildfires, with Altadena residents receiving a standing ovation.
