This landmark opening marks the beginning of a dual-airport system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, significantly easing the congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). The inauguration of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) was a two-part historic event, combining a formal grand opening by national leaders and a vibrant ceremonial start to commercial flight operations.

The airport was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 8, 2025.
