The Communiqué News

There's no such thing as expected at BAFTA," explains Anna Higgs, chair of the film committee, speaking to Variety after the nominees were announced. "I think to play a guessing game with our expert members and where they can go, particularly in a year that's so competitive, is hard."

Whatever happened to "Barbie"? This is likely to be one of the burning topics following the revelation of the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards nominations on Thursday, which saw Greta Gerwig's cultural phenomenon and box office powerhouse go unnominated in the best film and director categories.

While the film's five BAFTA nominations (including leading actress, supporting actor, and original screenplay) are undeniably impressive, the figure is likely to have taken many awards watchers by surprise. The film landed 15 positions on the BAFTA Longlists earlier this month after the first round of voting, tying for top place with "Oppenheimer" (which eventually received 13 nominations) and "Killers of the Flower Moon" (nine nominations). Given its status as the biggest film of 2023, and the fact that it has broken so many key records along the way, many may have felt a best film and director nomination was almost certain.

Higgs notes that both the number of BAFTA film entries and the number of movies voters are watching is up year-on-year, making it “more and more competitive, and more intense.”

While Gerwig may not have landed a director nomination, neither did many female directors, with “Anatomy of a Fall’s” Justine Triet the solitary woman among the six. This is an area that BAFTA sought to improve with the major overhaul of its voting process in 2020 (following a year where zero female directors were nominated), which added the Longlist stage that included an intervention to ensure gender parity.

"But we know it's not a fair race from the start," adds Higgs, citing a recent study that found only 12 female directors among the top 100 grossing films of the previous year. "We only have one female-directed picture for every three films directed by men. So having a woman on that nominee's list is a wonderful thing."

She does, however, highlight four female directors in the category of great British films: Molly Manning Walker ("How to Have Sex"), Raine Allen Miller ("Rye Lane"), Emerald Fennell ("Saltburn"), and Charlotte Regan ("Scrapper").

"We've got lots of women across the board," Higgs says, adding that 11 of the 33 directors nominated in various categories this year are women. "And we're seeing brand new emerging filmmakers with debut films up against legendary filmmakers, which speaks to the excitement and also the range of films that BAFTA celebrates for their excellence on their merit."

Among the 167 nonfiction films contending for Academy Award consideration are Abramorama's "32 Sounds," Netflix's "American Symphony," and Magnolia's "Little Richard: I Am Everything." Documentary films that have been officially selected in their nation and have either won an award at a qualifying film festival or have been submitted as an international feature. Documentary films are eligible to compete for Academy Awards in other categories, such as best picture. Members of the Documentary Branch choose the nominations and shortlist.

Not all films have received their mandatory qualifying releases, which they need to meet the other qualifying requirements for the category.

Voting on the shortlist will start later this week, and it will take a monumental effort to reduce this list to only 15 items. Expect major flops like the previous year's "Good Night Oppy." Additionally, I'd like to see how the four-hour documentaries compare to the works of the branch members, including Steve McQueen's "Occupied City" and Frederick Wiseman's "Menus-Plaisirs – Les Troisgros."

For general categories, the deadline for submissions is November 15, 2023. The preliminary shortlist for eight categories will be released between December 14 and 18, and the results will be made public on December 21. The official candidates will be announced on January 23, and the Oscar nomination period will take place from January 11–16, 2024.

Thursday, December 21st, will see the announcement of the 15-film shortlist.

Mumbai, December 5, 2023: Start the New Year off right!

Mumbai's first-ever Bollywood live concert, Stardom, will take place at the MMRDA Grounds, BKC, on January 20, 2024, hosted by Outcry Entertainment. Bollywood A-listers Shahid Kapoor, Nora Fatehi, and Malaika Arora will lead specially crafted dance routines after the four-hour extravaganza opens at 4 pm with brilliant and numerous opening acts. With his multi-character comedic routines, Sunil Grover is sure to make you laugh heartily, while singer Yo Yo Honey Singh is sure to have your fingers clicking, feet tapping, and hearts leaping with many of his greatest hits.

Outcry Entertainment's director and founder, Saurabh Chaudhary, restates that this unique live event is the largest and first of its type in the city. "Stardom wants to provide a distinctive in-person experience by giving ardent Bollywood fans a place to gather and commemorate their beloved performers. By assembling the most well-known Bollywood performers on one stage to perform live, we hope to break new ground and reinvent entertainment," he says.

One of the evening's choreographed highlights will be a 30-minute dance number particularly curated by Shahid Kapoor. He'll make a grand entrance first, then perform a few of his hit songs. In addition, he will engage with the gathered crowd before concluding with an astounding display. The actor, who is still adored for his role as Aditya Kashyap in Jab We Met, has received high praise for his dramatic performances in films like Haider, Kaminey, Udta Punjab, and Kabir Singh. More recently, he has been in Farzi and Bloody Daddy on OTT.

Admitting to having a fondness for live performances, Shahid expresses his enthusiasm about taking the stage at the upcoming event, saying, "My favorite part of doing live stage shows is getting to interact with the live audience. It's always exciting." Being able to dance live for the Mumbai crowd at Stardom by Outcry Entertainment in my hometown of Mumbai excites me. I can't wait to get on stage and give them an amazing night”

With a mix of her songs, Nora, who recreated "Dilbar," the first Hindi song to receive 20 million views on YouTube in less than a day, will take center stage for about thirty minutes. "As an artist, I love being on stage because that's when the storytelling magic comes to life. The actor, who will be performing for thirty minutes and captivating the audience with her vocals and sharp humor before she takes the curtain call, exults, "We inspire, connect, and share our souls with the audience which is right there in the moment with us." In 2019, Nora made her album debut, Pepeta. She has worked with worldwide musicians such as Rahma Raid and RedOne and also was a part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup’s anthem Light The Sky.

Along with Nora, Malaika Arora, who has been performing live for several years now, will also set the stage on fire. “It’s time to celebrate Bollywood with an unforgettable show. I can’t wait to share the magic with you!” exclaims the “Chaiya Chaiya” and “Munni Badnaam Hui” girl who has been penciled in for 20 minutes of high-energy song-and-dance.

There will also be a 40-minute live performance by YoYo Honey Singh. “I have always focussed on what brings me joy and performing before a live audience is something beyond special. I feed on their energy, their appreciation is the positivity I constantly seek and their support motivates me in this journey of life,” says the singer, rapper, music producer, and actor whose latest album, Honey 3.0, which came after nine years, is breaking records everywhere. The singer, rapper, music producer, and actor who has been regaling audiences the world over for the last two decades, is all buzzed up about the live concert. “I can’t wait to perform at this on-ground event in Mumbai. Be there, we will rock the stage together!” he asserts.

Sunil Grover is guaranteed to have everyone in splits with his hour-long act. “Comedy is all about right timing and the instant feedback from a live audience which helps me refine my act and up my game. I’m looking forward to being back on stage with some of your favorite characters and I hope people are as excited about Stardom which brings to the stage the best of music, dance, and comedy.” smiles the actor-comedian.

Stardom, one of the first exciting events of 2024, is already generating a lot of heat with its eye-catching visual effects and firework spectacular, various bars, and food court. Expert background dancers will bring this enormous stage to life, making the event an experience that is not to be missed. There are other sitting and standing options available, with prices starting at Rs 2,999. Children under five enter free of charge, but there won't be any additional seating available.
