Washington [US], May 2: Often referred to as the 'Biggest Night of Fashion,' Met Gala is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in New York.

After several pandemic postponements, this year's Met Gala will be held on the first Monday of May; just eight months after 2021's star-studded red carpet which saw stellar looks from the likes of Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and Kendall Jenner, reports Page Six.

The star-studded event brings together the world's largest celebrities to celebrate fashion in unique costumes and commemorate the opening of the Costume Institute's annual fashion exhibition. Here are the essentials you need to know before the starry event takes place.


When and where is the Met Gala taking place?

Traditionally taking place on the first Monday of May each year, Met Gala 2022 is set to take place on May 2. The Gala takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.


Where to watch the Met Gala 2022?

The event will be live-streamed on Vogue's website as well as its digital platforms on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, making it easy for all to see the biggest names from movies and fashion in Hollywood. In India, the live stream will start at 3:30 am on Tuesday, May 3.


What is the theme of the Met Gala 2022?

This year's Met Gala theme is 'In America: Fashion Anthology,' celebrating the museum's next exhibition on May 5. The dress code for the 2022 event is 'Gilded Glamour and White Tie', referring to the extravagant era of American fashion in the last decades of the 19th century, when industrialization rapidly widened the wealth gap in the country.


Who are the hosts of the Met Gala 2022?

This year's event is hosted by the couple of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds, with Regina King

and Lin-Manuel Miranda as co-hosts. Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour will serve as the honorary chairs for Met Gala 2022.


The Guest List

Although Vogue generally keeps its guest list in secrecy, Page Six had reported that Megan Thee Stallion will attend the Met Gala 2022 wearing Moschino. Beyond that, Katy Perry is also confirmed as one of the high-profile guests at the event. While Zendaya might miss out on the fashion gala, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift have all attended the event multiple times; hence plenty of other major names are also expected.

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (lCCR) and FLAME University are organizing a two day seminar on Indian Cinema and Soft Power on 3rd and 4th of May 2022. Being held in Mumbai, the seminar aims to bring together practitioners and scholars of Indian cinema and international relations to deliberate, discuss and dwell upon the pertinent discourse in contemporary times.

Renowned film director Shri Shekhar Kapoor will be inaugurating the National Seminar on Indian Cinema and Soft Power. Maharashtra Governor Shri B S Koshyari and ICCR President Shri Vinay Sahasrabuddhe will also grace the inaugural function. Information and Broadcasting Minister, Shri Anurag Thakur is scheduled to deliver the valedictory session on 4 May at the Film Division, Mumbai.

The seminar will be chaired by eminent personalities and renowned experts like Subhash Ghai, Roopa Ganguly, Bharat Bala, Ambarish Mishra, Arunaraje Patil, Ashok Rane, Meenakshi Shedde, Manoj Muntashir, Paresh Rawal, and G P Vijay Kumar.

Cinema is a pivotal instrument of soft power. The seminar will deliberate and discuss the potential of Indian Cinema in movie making and policy design to further cultivate cultural sensitivities towards India and increase strategic engagement with the Indian diaspora. In the seminar, Scholars of Indian cinema and international relations will discuss themes such as cinematic colonialism, global influence of Indian cinematic music, regional cinema and its global influence, foreign audience and advanced technology.

The extensive reach of Indian Cinema has potential to cultivate a cultural sensitivity towards India. The rise of information technology coupled with the ever-expanding size of the Indian diaspora indicates that there is merit in mapping and understanding the influence of Indian Cinema abroad. Recent scholarly work has focused on the rising influence of cinema to build international appeal and influence audiences. The seminar is an opportunity to continue the discourse and develop a deeper understanding of the role of cinematic influences and its intricate connections to soft power.

The Seminar is scheduled to have the following sessions:

  2. Indian Cinema as a Vehicle for Spreading Awareness about idea of India Abroad

  3. Global Influence of Indian Cinematic Music

  4. Regional Cinema and its Global Influence

  5. Indian Cinema's engagement with Foreign Audience and Advanced Technology

On the occasion of commemoration of Satyajit Ray’s Birth Centenary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting has initiated various activities to pay tribute to the legendary filmmaker. As part of this, a three-day film festival will be organised at various venues across India. Films made by and made on Satyajit Ray will be screened at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Pune on 2nd, 3rd & 4th May 2022

The screenings at all venues is for free. The audiences will get to appreciate a slate of films that celebrate Ray’s life and also experience his celebrated films on big screens.

Managing Director, National Film Development Corporation, (NFDC) India, Mr. Ravinder Bhakar, said that “On the occasion of Azaadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, it is a great honour for us to celebrate the birth centenary & roll out a special gallery at National Museum of Indian Cinema as a tribute to the legendary filmmaker. People have seen Ray's films in some form or the other; yet this time we invite Ray lovers for our handpicked package on the big screens in selected theatres for free in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Pune from 2nd May to 4th May 2022. The newly restored few by NFAI are a delight to watch.”


The inauguration will be followed by the screening of the opening film at the festival Aparajito, which is its ‘India Premier’.


Panel Discussion:

A panel discussion is scheduled to be held on 4th May 2022 at 4:00 PM post the screening of Pather Panchali (Satyajit Ray’s directorial debut feature), the closing film of the festival. The panel discussion shall be live on NFDC’s official Facebook for all audiences especially the cinephiles & aficionados of Ray’s work. The panelists will be Shyam Benegal, Barun Chanda (actor from Ray’s Seemabadh) & Shantanu Moitra; it will be moderated by Shankhayan Ghosh.
