The Minister was in Mumbai on a 2-day visit between 15th May - 16th May 2022 and inaugurated several public amenities at the Kanheri caves.

The Kanheri caves comprise more than 110 different rock-cut monolithic excavations and is one of the largest single excavations in the country. These excavations were primarily undertaken during the Hinayana phase of Buddhism but also has several examples of the Mahayana stylistic architecture as well as few printings of the Vajrayana order. The name Kanheri is derived from ‘Kanhagiri’ in Prakrit and occurs in the Nasik inscription of the Satavahana ruler Vasisthiputra Pulumavi.

While addressing the media, the Union Minister Shri G Kishan Reddy said, “Kanheri caves are part of our ancient heritage as they provide evidence of evolution and our past. It is a privilege to inaugurate the works that have been carried out on the occasion of Buddha Purnima. Buddha‘s message is relevant even today in addressing challenges such as conflict and climate change ”.

He added, “If we look at the architectural and engineering marvel of heritage sites like Kanheri caves or the Ajanta Ellora caves it signifies the knowledge about art, engineering, management construction, patience and perseverance that people had back then. Many such monuments back then took more than 100 years to be built. Such caves and monuments are difficult to build even now, in 21st century, with so much of technological and engineering expertise”.

Kanheri was mentioned in the travelogues of foreign travelers. The earliest reference of Kanheri is ascribed to Fa-Hein who visited India during 399-411 CE and later by several other travellers. The scale and extent of excavations, with its numerous water cisterns, epigraphs, one of the oldest dams, a stupa burial gallery and excellent rainwater harvesting system, indicate its popularity as a monastic and pilgrim centre. Kanheri consists of excavations primarily undertaken during the Hinayana phase but also has several examples of the Mahayana stylistic architecture as well as few printings of the Vajrayana order. Its importance is heightened by the fact that it is the only centre where a continuous progression of Buddhist faith and architecture is observed as an unbroken legacy right from 2nd century CE (cave no. 2 stupa) to 9th century CE are observed here. Kanheri flourished under the patronage of Satavahana, Traikutakas, Vakatakas and Silaharas and through donations made by the wealthy merchants of the region.

The Indian Oil Foundation is providing Tourist Infrastructure Facilities at Kanheri caves after signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Archaeological Survey of India through the National Culture Fund (NCF). Under the project work of renovation and up-gradation to the existing structures was allowed as the work comes in the protected limit of the monument. The existing buildings such as the visitor pavilion, custodian quarter, booking office were up-graded and refurbished. The area from booking counter to custodian quarter was up-graded by providing landscaping and plants.

As the caves fall in the core area of the forest, electricity and water supply are not available. However, arrangements for electricity were made available by providing a solar system and generator set as an alternative arrangement. The water is available through the bore well that was constructed.

The Union Minister Said, “Public-private partnership, corporates, NGOs and civil Society plays an important role in protecting, preserving and propagating our heritage so that future generations can access these treasures. We all must work together and in partnership with experts and scholars where heritage can be a catalyst for development. It is a moral duty of every citizen of this country to take interest and responsibility for the preservation and conservation of our rich heritage”.

Kanheri is set amidst one of the most beautiful landscapes within a designated National Park and its setting is an integral part of its planning, with beautiful forecourts and rock-cut benches to enjoy the scenic vistas.

Created in partnership with metaverse development studio Melon, the Cicaverse experience celebrates the retailer’s unisex sneaker style, the Cica.

“We’re super excited to bring our iconic brand offering to the metaverse as Clarks is passionate about empowering kids and teens to be the best that they can be,” said Clarks’ global chief marketing and digital officer, Tara McRae, in a release.

McRae continued: “Roblox is all about understanding and enhancing people’s shared experiences, which is what made this feel like such a natural place for us to have a presence in. The Cicaverse is the perfect way that allows our early learners to explore, create, to learn and to play in a dedicated community space that they can call their own.”

Through the platform, users can visit the Clarks Stadium, where they receive a virtual pair of the popular silhouette for an online sports tournament. Participants can take part in games, such as BMX stunts, parkour and breakdancing, with each activation designed with help from the real-life athletes who aided in the development of the shoe style.

Young athletes featured in the game include UK break-dancer B-Girl Terra, UK parkour champion Robbie Griffith and BMX rider Connor Stitt.

B-Girl Terra, the 15-year-old break-dancer who is set to compete at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics, said: “Roblox is a space me and my friends love to meet and have fun in, so to be able to create and have fun in, so to be able to create and see my own avatar in the Cicaverse wearing a sneaker that I love and had a hand in designing is just a dream come true.”

Winners of the games will receive a limited-edition gold Cica X Roblox medallion necklace that celebrates the brand’s heritage. The same necklace, in a limited number, will also be made in real life to be gifted worldwide, with further online games set to unlock this prize too.

Users will also be able to visit a virtual Clarks store, where they can purchase jumbo jet packs to sneakers with fire, all with the goal of helping their avatars stand out.

Clarks said there are more virtual experiences set to drop over the next year, including exclusive experiences and product drops for the Roblox universe.

UK, May 17: If there was one television event that provides more than enough spectacle, it is the Eurovision Song Contest. For this year, the wow-effect was often achieved by a lot of glitter, flowing dresses, or on the contrary, very pronounced colours and wolf-masks.

The UK

TikTok star Sam Ryder came second place in the event, representing the UK with the song ‘Space Man’. He did this in a black suit which was appropriately decorated with crystals mirroring various space themes.

Moldova

Moldova's entry has participated in the song contest before, though never has claimed to be going for the win. The band's aim is to bring joy, which they certainly did, not only with the song, but also with their eye-catching outfits.

Spain

Chanel Terrero took the stage for Spain. Dressed in a glittery outfit that was very reminiscent of a toreador outfit, she performed a song that would not have been out of place for the likes of Jennifer Lopez. The song was even originally written for Lopez and the intense choreography of the act was done by well-known choreographer Kyle Hanagami.

Norway

A particularly surprising performance was Norway’s entry, the act Subwoolfer, who performed the song ‘Give that wolf a banana’. They did this in a black suit with a white shirt, but with a yellow mask of a pointy-eared wolf. Many have suspected that behind Subwoolfer are the two men from Ylvis, who made the famous 'What does the fox say' almost 10 years ago.

Australia

The Australian entry's outfit weighed a whopping 40 kilos, but for the wow-effect it was worth it. Dressed in all-white, with a long train and a crystal mask, Australia could definitely count on a place in this year’s list of most memorable outfits.

The Netherlands

The Dutch entry S10 performed in an understated outfit created by Viktor & Rolf. Before the performance, both S10 and the designer duo announced that they would be collaborating on the Dutch singer's stage outfit. The look was completed with simple white trainers.

Ukraine

Winner Ukraine (see the header image) is of course not to be missed. The band, Kalush Orchestra, wore outfits from the Bukovyna region during their performance. The leader of the band, for example, wore an outfit from the 20th century that was used for traditional celebrations. All items were made especially for the Eurovision Song Contest.
